BBP Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (BBP), an industrial pump maker headquartered in Beijing, explains how to match a sewage pump to the solids it handles and the station where it operates.

BEIJING, China, October 31, 2026 — BBP Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (BBP), an industrial pump maker headquartered in Beijing, is publishing guidance on selecting sewage pumps based on wastewater contents and station layout. Drawing on published data for four sewage pump series, the guidance covers submersible, grinder, self-priming and packaged lift station designs with 30, 50 or 76 mm solid passage. It addresses a common mistake: choosing a pump on flow and head alone, then installing it in a wet well containing wipes, rags or chloride-laden industrial discharge.

Flow and head matter, but reliability also depends on what the liquid carries, station design and casing exposure. These factors determine whether a pump operates reliably or requires frequent maintenance.

Wipes, rags and grit set the starting point

Wastewater pump guidance from the Hydraulic Institute identifies common solids, including household waste, rags, hair, plastic scraps, food waste, sand and grit. Personal wipes, towels and cleaning cloths marketed as safe to flush can combine with rags into masses that clog pumps and piping. Its advice is to identify the fluid’s nature and share that information with the pump manufacturer.

One frequently missing enquiry detail is worst-case solids. BBP sizes solid passage according to the largest foreign matter expected, rather than average conditions. Its range offers 30, 50 and 76 mm passage. A 30 mm unit handling fibrous rags can clog weekly, leaving maintenance teams to address the problem after commissioning.

Submersible units for mixed municipal and industrial flow

For municipal collection and industrial wastewater plants, BBP’s ASW submersible sewage pump series is the default option. Available with channel-impeller and semi-vortex impeller variants, it covers 1.5–200 kW, DN50–DN500 discharge sizes, 30–5,000 m³/h flow and 5–60 m head. Motors feature IP68 protection and thermal protection, with a double mechanical seal in an oil-filled chamber.

Impeller selection matters more than the model name. BBP recommends the semi-vortex version with 50 mm solid passage for residential and light commercial collection with neutral pH and mixed solids. Larger industrial treatment plants use the channel impeller with 76 mm passage, while sludge recirculation uses a vortex impeller to reduce blade contact with high-solids return flow.

Where it stops: An open passage allows solids through but does not cut them. Wipes and cloths can bridge even a wide passage when fibres form a rope. A grinder design is worth considering in these conditions.

Grinder pumps for fibrous waste and force mains

BBP’s sewage grinder pump uses a tungsten-carbide cutter ring upstream of a high-pressure impeller. Its specification states that solids are shredded to 6 mm or smaller before discharge. The range covers 10–80 m³/h at 10–50 m head, with 1.1–22 kW single-phase and three-phase motors. For commercial basements and parking levels with fibrous waste, BBP recommends this design at 5–25 m³/h and 15–45 m head.

A force main carries sewage under pressure to a higher or more distant point. Shredded solids travel through it, while intact rags can collect and narrow the pipe. This is why the cutter is paired with a high-pressure impeller.

Where it stops: The grinder range tops out at 80 m³/h, excluding large municipal stations. Its cutter is also a wear part requiring inspection. It is designed for fibrous solids at modest flow, not as a general upgrade.

Self-priming units that keep the pump out of the pit

Some stations are difficult to service because their pumps sit underwater. BBP’s AZX self-priming series installs above ground and re-primes after each duty cycle, suiting lift stations where a wet pit is impractical or maintenance access is a priority.

It covers 25–700 m³/h at 8–45 m head, with 30 or 50 mm solid passage, an HT250 cast iron casing and an optional 304 stainless steel impeller.

Where it stops: The published suction lift is 7 m. If the lowest liquid level sits further below the pump after suction pipe losses, the design exceeds its lift limit. A submersible unit or packaged station is a better comparison.

Packaged lift stations in place of a concrete wet well

A sewage lift station adds a tank, controls and a second pump to the selection decision. BBP’s packaged design combines a GRP or HDPE tank, two submersible pumps operating in alternation and a control panel with a high-level alarm float. Tank volumes range from 0.5–30 m³ in simplex, duplex or triplex form. It serves as a drop-in replacement for failed concrete wet wells.

At a petrochemical site in the Middle East, a GRP tank and two ASW pumps alternating every 60 minutes replaced a concrete structure that had cracked at the inlet within seven years. According to BBP’s matrix, alternation also halves the seal load on each pump. Buyers should compare tank material, pump count, alternation logic and alarm points when evaluating suppliers.

Corrosion risk comes from chemistry, not from the label

Sewage pumps can handle very different liquids. BBP recommends epoxy-coated HT250 cast iron for municipal collection at pH 6.5–8, while chloride-rich, mildly acidic industrial wastewater calls for 304 stainless steel. For abrasive sludge recirculation, the company specifies an HT250 casing with a 27% Cr wear ring.

Surroundings matter too. BBP identifies coastal salt air as a reason to upgrade from cast iron to 304 stainless steel, even when the liquid itself is relatively benign.

Where it stops: Material selection assumes the chemistry is known. One intake described on the company’s page appeared to be ordinary municipal sewage until an industrial tenant’s chloride spike changed the corrosion picture. A water analysis from the actual discharge is essential to assess the risk of early casing failure.

Details to send with a sewage pump enquiry

Quotations become easier to compare when every enquiry includes the same information. Buyers should provide:

    • Worst-case solids, including wipes, rags, grit and industrial debris, and whether screening is used.
    • Station type: submersible unit in a wet well, self-priming unit above ground or packaged lift station.
    • Vertical distance from the lowest liquid level to the pump inlet for self-priming applications.
    • Liquid pH, chloride levels and any coastal or corrosive surroundings.
    • Discharge arrangement, whether gravity sewer, treatment plant inlet or force main, including length and diameter.
    • Control requirements, including alternation, alarm points and standby pump numbers.

A supplier receiving these details can recommend a series and impeller with a clear reason. One receiving only flow and head is guessing, and the cost of a wrong choice appears later through maintenance call-outs.
